Is Ibra a jack of all trades?

On Friday unofficial presidential candidate Ibrahim Isamil (Ibra) implied, having earlier said otherwise, that President Qayyoom cannot run for president under the draft constitution whose ratification is reportedly imminent. Speaking on DhiFM’s One-to-one programme, he said that the draft constitution ‘is not a new constitution’. He said that ‘qaumeh gai iru iru kolhaa qaanoon asaasee aleh nuvaane. 1932 gai Dhivehi Raajjeygai qaanoon asaasee ekulavaalevunu hisaabun feshigen e qaanoon asaasee mi othee’ (‘a country does not replace a constitution …. Since a constitution was formulated in 1932, it is that constitution which exists today’).

Ibra’s interpretation makes me cringe. It is glaringly obvious that he has no grasp of constitutional (and legal) principles or knowledge about constitutional history elsewhere. It is embarrassing that he has chosen to speak on such an important matter in spite of being so ill-informed about it.

Watch this space for a concise analysis of whether or not the draft constitution may be interpreted as revised or as replacing the existing constitution.

I don't know when this arguement about the new/old constitution started. Why is it so important? But I do know that it is so much important for President Maumoon to get a legal approval for his next presidency. So why don't you just tell us what you want, that you want Maumoon to become the president once again.

Or is it Ibrahim Nasir? After all, the Republican Party's presidential candidate may be Nasir after all, hehe. Hashim

Yeah, there are only two persons on this earth who could not run for the presidency if this constitution is passed. One is in ICU of Mount Elizabeth hospital, the other one is in Theemuge. So who do you think would have a greater interest in highjacking the constitutional process? use your thinking before you blabber yourself on the net.

hahaha. since your name is not their i coudn't comment on your knowledge of the constitution. but we have seen ibra in action in majlis and surely he is the one who makes most sense there. don't try to spin it this way. if you so badly want qayyoom to run for a new term go try the supreme court when it is formed.

Dear Vindhu and others

My objective is to highlight issues of principle and law. I firmly believe that the more we all highlight such issues the more it will enrich debate and allow our political leaders, including Ibra, Anni, Qayoom, Hassan, or even Qasim, etc. to see issues from various perspectives. I believe such debates should strengthen our values as an Islamic democracy, and raise our tolerance levels in recognizing that everyone of us has a right to express themselves within the parameters of law.

Best regards,
The New Maldivian

Ho Ho Ho Shuaib. You removed the first comment I put in naming you, which suggests that I was correct. You are Shuaib Shah, impersonating as a Maldivian and trying to attack anyone who is a threat to your father in law. Ibra is my hero, he will be the next President of the country Insha Allah. We will stop foreigners sucking our blood then.
